RIA, WOW and a Contest!

Its time to hold a contest!  One winner, and anyone can participate.  All to promote my RIAdventure cruise this February.  (social cruise for CF/Flex/AIR geeks and family from Miami to Bahamas)

What is the prize you ask?

A World of Warcraft account (created but not played) with ~ 80 days of prepaid time.  Yup, the game and about 3 months of prepaid time!  It includes the original game as well as the Burning Crusade addition.  If you show up on my server I will even help you get started. :-)

If you ever wanted to see what the hubbub is about, this is a good chance to do so.  I have created the account for you and added the play time, you just need to download the client software (free download) and enter the user/pass I give you and away you go.

Note, this account is already created, so you can't use it for the Zevrah mount.

How do you enter?

Option A:
Every person who posts a comment on this blog post will get one entry.  The comment has to contain 2 things.  Yes you must do BOTH to qualify. (plus post your name and valid email though the email wont show).

1) List your top reason someone should go to RIAdventure.
2) List your top reason you want to try out WOW (world of warcraft).

Option B:
You can get a second entry (for a total of two possible entries) if you blog about the contest and post your answers to the two questions above in your blog post and then link back to this post.  You must comment here with a link to that blog post so I have a way of knowing about it.

RIAdventure - ColdFusion, Flex and Air Cruise

Yup, you read correctly.  Its a cruise.  A real one!  I am officially jumping into the RIA event ring.  If your down with CF, Flex, Air and other web related goodness  AND your down for having a nice vacation with family and friends then this is the trip for you.

This will be quite different though.  No sessions, no fees.  Just a bunch of us getting together to network, be social and have fun.

more expensive = more sales and more profit

I know that sounds strange, but often it happens.  Compete with every other person for the sale of a cup of coffee and you have a hard fight.  Double or triple the price and make everything look upscale and you have a guaranteed set of clients.  You may sell a bit less (maybe) but the profit marine will more then make up for it.

Well, that is the theory anyway.  It is discussed much in business classes, specifically marketing.  I often wondered if I could set up a site or service that would cater to those wanting to pay more for some reason.

Pit Bull vs Porcupine

Just got this via email.  OMG.  Full Image Here

A Pit bull decided he would battle a Porcupine in back of his house in
Southern California. But being both brave and STUPID, he ultimately learned
the hard way that he can't always win. No matter how tough you are. A vet
sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills. The dog survived,
and hopefully learned a valuable lesson. Now tell me you had a bad day!!!

apple shows it's crappy side - explaining no flash on iphone

I was just commenting on Tech crunch regarding apples release of the iphone SDK.  One thing first:  Iphone is cool tech.  Its sexy, and easy to use.  It offers little new, but its new version might.  That said...

To sum up, apple said:  'if you want to sell your app on the iphone, you must sell through itunes, and apple will take 30% fee for doing the sale processing for you'.

Promoting ColdFusion

These videos have nothing to do with ColdFusion, however can you imagine spoof videos done to promote ColdFusion based on this style?  If I had any video talent I would sooo do this.  Anyone?

RPM Challenge 2008 - Time to get your music on.

RPM Challenge is one of those brilliant things in life that asks for nothing but energy, creativity and passion and in return delivers it all back to us ten fold.  It is a challenge to musicians of all genres and skill levels to write and record an entire album in the month of February.  It sounds like a daunting task, and frankly it is, however it has also proven to be completely doable.  Not just for music veterans but for musical newbies like myself.

In 2006 I signed up for this crazy challenge along with 170+ other people/bands.  In a fit of a few afternoons/evenings I managed to pull off 10 improvisational saxophone movements and completed the challenge with about 6 hours to spare.  Due to the success of its inaugural year and the enthusiasm from the 2006 participants the challenge grew quite a bit last year (2007).  Bands from every continent signed up.  Yes every continent.  Over 850 albums were completed and thousands of musicians participated.  In fact, that music is all online and available for your listening pleasure right now.  And some pretty darn good media coverage came out of it as well.

The community built around the web site is also quite impressive.  Buzzing with activity all year long, well past the end of last years challenge.  In just a small example of community building, one enterprising participant named Mick even put together a boxed set compilation of 6 CD's .  The boxed set of music came from various RPM artists 2007 entries and he mailed out those boxed sets to numerous participants.  All organized through the website.  As I write this 27 bands are currently logged on and doing something on the web site.

A lesser known fact is that this isn't a for profit venture, there are no entry fees, and sponsorship is less than minimal.  This is 100% from the heart and it shows.  Everyone working on the project in an administrative capacity is a volunteer and most are musicians themselves.

So now it is a new year and a new challenge. Its been 24 hours since sign ups started and without even an announcement there are 120+ registered bands from every corner of the globe. We have a few weeks now to muster up the energy and kick this thing off right.  I have once again signed up and as of right now have no clue what I will be doing.  I am excited as all hell though, and have vowed to spread the word to anyone who will listen.  This year RPM Challenge will have thousands of people participating.  Original music will be made, inspiration will be had and lives will be changed.  If you have ever wanted to learn an instrument - this is the time.  If you have ever wanted to start a band -  make it happen.  If you have always wished you had continued to play the piano - today is the day.  It doesn't need to be perfect.  Indeed it wont be.  But you will be so proud of what you have done, and you will have made friendships in the process that will propel you to your dreams.

What about the rest of the world - the non-musicians and the supporters?  It is your duty to spread the word.  Tell everyone you know, send notes to your local TV stations, blog about it and make lots of noise.  RPM Challenge 2008 will make history.  Make sure you're a part of it.

Small technical note: The Jukebox playing 8500+ original tracks is powered by Adobe Flex and is pretty darn cool.

mythbusters flip taxi and bus with jet

This clip is kind of long, but worth it.  I saw this on TV a couple nights ago and it renewed my vow to someday have enough money that I could just do cool stuff like this for the 'educational' value and fun of it.

Basically the myth was 'if a jet lands at the same time a car drives by right behind it the car will flip over'.  Not many airports around here are set up like that, but I am sure some have a road/highway right next to the landing spot.
