RIAdventure Was a Blas with photos

RIAdventure 360 wrapped up just a few days ago.  Back to the ice cold here in New Hampshire.  We had a great trip and conference.   Fantastic people, great discussions and a good time had by all.

At the conference we covered Flex, Data Visualization, ColdFusion ORM, Android Dev, Slider, Push Button Engine, Flash to iPhone and more over 2 days and many evenings.

My Domain Name Generator

For fun this weekend I decided to build my own domain name generator. It is a one page site built with ColdFusion (CF) and JQuery (JS). Basically it gets random words from the categories you select in the order that you select, then checks to see if the generated domain name is available. If so it provides a link to godaddy.com for the result.

If people actually buy a domain name via the site I theoritically get a 20% commission. Now I just need 500 domain names a day purchased from the site and I am all set.

For those wondering how I am getting the availability, I looked into the reseller programs of the main registrars and found that each had a fee to sign up. GoDaddy actually charges the most if you want access to their API. So I then found a handy whois cfc posted by Dan Vega that used Java to ping a whois server. I modified it for my needs and just parsed the results as needed. Instead of going the reseller direction (I don't want to be responsible for anyones domains and I think people would prefer to register with godaddy directly) I signed up with Commission Junction for the affiliate program.

Let me know what you think. What categories should I add? Any words missing from categories that you noticed? Any spelling errors?

How To Be a Good Boss/Manager - Send Em on Cruise

I recently found out about one ColdFusion based company that is considering sending up to 10 people to RIAdventure this year.  How fantastic is that!   For those of you that don't know, RIAdventure is a networking/social cruise for RIA interested people in February from Miami to Bahamas.

So I decided to find out a bit more about the company and their interest and talked to Mark Phillips, Principal of Vertabase.   The company has been providing project management / time tracking since 1999.  All done with the power of ColdFusion no less. I hadn't heard of them before which surprises me.  It also made for great timing as my company is just now looking into time sheet solutions for our staff.  They have an AIR app that is free which provides basic time tracking for projects/tasks.  Looks like it would do the trick for individuals in need. Their main product, Vertabase 4, offers both a hosted solution as well as a self install option on CF7 and CF8. The software itself also appears to be fairly robust in functionality and reports.

RIAdventure - ColdFusion, Flex and Air Cruise

Yup, you read correctly.  Its a cruise.  A real one!  I am officially jumping into the RIA event ring.  If your down with CF, Flex, Air and other web related goodness  AND your down for having a nice vacation with family and friends then this is the trip for you.

This will be quite different though.  No sessions, no fees.  Just a bunch of us getting together to network, be social and have fun.

ColdFusion Image Manipulation Showcase v1

I am pleased to release my latest project... stufficanfitinmymouth.com.

It isn't as naughty as it sounds, rather it is a fun site where you can upload photos, manipulate them, make funny things and save them and share with friends.  You can even take those images and create postage stamps from them (via 3rd party).

Quick Notes

I have been busy the past couple days migrating email over to a new google apps account for everyone here.  Been interesting, and as such I had to change my main google IM account.  People can now chat with me via jcyr@besavvy.com.   Yes, I know bots can find my email, but they already have it and gmail does a good job at filtering.  I am not going to hide and obfuscate my email just because other people are shit heads.

Spam Stock Tracker Update

I just relaunched my Spam Stock Tracker web site.  New design, more data, links to other useful sites and more importantly I am starting with a fresh batch of data to track.

My last batch of stocks ended in near total disaster.  I think I lost 90% of the value or more.  Plus most are out of business or simply changed too many times for me to track.

Best Affililiate Programs

I have been asked many times by friends and client about ways to make money with their web sites.  The quick answer for many is AdSense, but there are many other programs out there.  I decided to make a quick little site covering some of my favorites.  It isn't a complete list, as there are a lot of scams out there.  Rather these are programs I have used or are known to be legitimate and work well for people.

My Best Affiliate Programs list is a work in progress.  I will be adding more when I have a moment or two.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Videos of my CMS

I know that a lot of my blog readers don't really know what I do for a living and for those of you that are non-technical in nature my descriptions probably sound like gibberish.  I work for Savvy Software and am the lead developer for our main product Savvy Content Manager.  We just posted 30 short videos demonstrating some of the functionality of the CMS.  This is not a complete review of the product, but it should give some of you an idea for what it is I have been working on in general.  All powered by ColdFusion of course.

Our CMS has been doing quite well lately.  We get constant search traffic from schools, municipalities, and companies of all sizes.  It isn't unusual for one of us to talk to the likes of Disney and CareerBuilder in the same day.  I can't wait to talk to our latest customers that are going to CFUnited and network with some of my fellow CF friends.

Need for an RSS Aggregator Service?

I find myself really wanting to build my own aggregator of RSS feeds.  I use Google's custom home page for my rss needs, and for the most part it works pretty well.  But I dont' want to add all the RSS feeds I like to it, just not enough room.  What I really want is one box that I have display a merged version of 10 different feeds.  These are my friends and such who only post once every few days.  It would take less space and offer an easier interface for me.  Am I alone?

I think there could be a real value in a web portal that you can send a list of feeds and it will create a custom merged feed from.  It would have its own page but also be available as a feed for whatever needs.  You can do this with Yahoo Pipes, but pipes has issues that prevent it from being as useful as it could be.  A it isn't easy to find aggregations that already exist.  B it is quite slow.  C the interface is intimidating to all but techies.  D I could go on.

So, would you use a service that for no cost would merge your feeds into one feed and output it on a friendly page and also give it to you as RSS?  Would you want to create many mini aggregations?  Would you want to share them with others, people you dont know but may share your interests?

A good example of an RSS agregator that I use all the time is FullasaGoog.  I wouldn't want or try to replace it, but rather offer that kind of functionality to people to create their own and for any kind of topic/category.
