Googles Browser: Chrome

By now most of you have heard that Google will be releasing its own web browser based on webkit.

I am not at all excited or interested in testing on yet another browser. Seriously. But I don't have a choice in the matter so I may as well dive in and see what the fuss is about.  There was one feature that I am pretty interested in.

Since Chrome (the name of the new browser) runs each tab as its own thread they wont impact each other.  If one web site's JS kills the thread or slows things down the other tabs are fine. Further, there is some sort of mechanism to view which tabs are taking the most CPU and most memory.  This I think is really handy.

If you want to learn more read the comic book they created to explain the browser.  Its more of an illustrated book really and has a good amount of depth.  The actual site for Chrome is here, though as of this morning it is still a 404 error.

Something else that is interesting.  The browser via api constantly downloads new lists of phishing and malware web sites.  This API will be open to the public so anyone can use it (I am understanding that to me you and me as well as other browser developers).

Updated: Added a link to the actual Chrome site, though it still isn't up.

Update 2: Looks like a web cast is scheduled for 11am Pacific.

Tabs and the browser frame are handled in separate processes in IE8 Beta 2 - it has already saved me once so far (and yeah, it was Flash playing up, as usual!)... It was a real surprise to see the browser notify me that there was a problem with the tab and have it relaunch the tab while everything else kept working. And while the tab was locked up the others still worked fine. Finally :)

Google continues it's campaign for World Domination via the internet. Why limit yourself to all the traffic when you can get all the traffi... Doh!
