New Atlanta Announces Free Open Source BlueDragon
Some interesting news this morning. On a list I read someone had posted a link to an announcement regarding New Atlanta open-sourcing their J2EE server. More specifically creating an edition that will be open-sourced. I thought that posting it must have been a mistake as the date on it was for Wednesday, and I would assume that they were going to wait until CFUnited Europe to make the announcement.
Then Mark Dew noticed that Vince Bonfanti blogged on it today, which confirms that New Atlanta wanted the news out before the conference. Their FAQ is a bit light, and suggests that more details will be available, as well as the actual open source software by CFUnited in D.C.
So what does this mean? Hard to see exactly how this will shake up.
- Will people (Adobe, Customers, Press, Bloggers) see this as a direct threat to CF8?
- Will it impact Adobe's sales?
- Will it impact New Atlanta revenue (or will the increased exposure lead to additional revenue)?
- Will the fact that it is open source open the flood gates to CFML availability and market share?
- Will all those new users flood our blogs with CFML questions and searches, earning us millions in google adsense (hahahaha, yea right).
- Will this have an impact on Railo?
I am looking forward to reading everyones reactions. I need to ponder it a bit more before I make any predictions myself. I used BlueDragon for a while on my server powering this blog. I did move to CF8 as I wanted the new feature set (and am quite happy with it). I was happy with BlueDragon as well though and overall I think that having some competition is a good thing.
