This is a proven formula.  100% Guaranteed.  If you can prove me wrong, and also convince me that you really tried and show that you are 100% committed to success... I will buy you a beer. (does not apply to anyone outside of Portsmouth NH, may be PBR)

Just follow these steps to make your millions, then watch the video below.

  1. Find a funny/hip domain name.  If you can't think of one, look for domains about to expire that do something for you.  I have registered moremoreclub.com.  No idea what I will do with it, but its great!
  2. Pick up some web development books. PHP, CFML, ASP, Java, doesn't matter.  Learn enough to make stuff work.  Make sure to ignore all the security and scalability related chapters.  SQL injection?  Deal with that next week.
  3. Read inspirational web sites.  Make sure they are not about actual development or content related, but rather inspire you to want to make more money by telling you how easy it is.
  4. Build your web 2.0 site.  Make sure you have a system for users to sign up, and that you can easily show off how many new users are there.  Make it necessary and easy for users to invite their entire address book to join, though they probably have no clue why they are doing so. Spam their entire list, with a personal email from the current user saying they are invited, blah blah blah.  This is important, as number of users = amount of money you get.  As you will learn in step 8 it doesn't have to be scalable.  Once the site has too many users it will be someone else's problem anyway. Everyone releases in Beta these days, so make sure you release in Alpha.
  5. Make sure its 'skinnable' and you have lots of 'widgets'.  Use outside services to actually do the widgets and skins as it makes your life easier and you don't have to support them.  Users like to customize their profiles for some reason, and they will spend lots of time doing it.
  6. Get all your friends and family to create stumbleupon accounts and over the next week have them stumble your site.
  7. Do the same thing with Digg.
  8. Spam boingboing and techcrunch repeatedly with emails begging them to post about your project.  They love that. Don't take no or silence for an answer.  That is looser thinking.
  9. Once the site has lots of users and JUST before everyone starts asking 'whats the point of this site?' you post it for sale on sitepoint.
  10. Sell for $280,000, go out for dinner, then revisit step number 1 again.

Obviously these steps are easy and foolproof.

You should be able to do this 3-6 times a year.

Quick side note as I don't want the wrath of digg, stumbleupon, boingboing or techcrunch on me.  Don't actually spam them.  Or if you do don't tell them I told you to do it.  This is, after all, a joke.  Or more accurately an observation of how many people behave online and their unrealistic expectations.  If you haven't figured that out by now watch the video again.  Also, I didn't do the video.  I just think its funny.

This post wins.

I Laughed so hard at #8 that people in the offices ask what was so funny. I explained but they didn't get it.
