Fios vs Comcast

My first Fios Review:

Today I dropped Comcast for internet service. I had nearly daily connection issues with my internet, and speeds ranging from incredible (15mbs) to dismal (uploads at 14kbs) depending on who else was online at the time. The worst for me was the connection issues and router restarts, but upload speeds were a close second.

I finally took a good look around and noted that Fios is offered in NH now and for $39/month I can get 5mps down and 2mbs up. So better speed, better service (consumer reports rated them VERY high) for a lower price. Well that just never happens!

So I took the plunge. I called on Wednesday and they had me installed by Monday morning. The install took a while as they ran fiber to my house and had to install various electronic boxes in the basement, but I am now ready for TV (NH still has no Fios TV) and phone if I chose.

In doing speed tests I have found it to be very consistent at 5mbs download and about 1.7 mbs upload.

In a wicked coincendence I got my comcast bill today, with a note that they were raising prices. Next step, call them and cancel my internet service. I only save a few dollars a month, but that is just fine by me.

Interesting to note that Comcast cheats like crazy on speedtest sites. They offer good speeds for the first few seconds of any download which skews tests in their favor. Sustained speeds are where the real comparison should be made. Check out my review for more information and proof of what I’m talking about: http://www.jimgoings.com/2008/03/fios-vs-comcast-r...

BTW - How did your Comcast cancellation go?
